The big thing to do in 6th grade at Longfellow Middle School is to go ROLLER SKATING!! I had NO IDEA kids still liked to roller skate! I grew up skating in our family room at the age of 3 when we lived in Seattle. Then I progressed to the garage where we would skate laps round and round. The Lightening Rollers were formed and routines were started. In Richland we would sweep the street to get all the small pebbles out of our way, draw up flyers to hand out to the neighbors and have roller skating shows. We had great routines of flying down our steep driveway to jump the curb and start! There is even an awesome video of me doing a scale, with my back leg coming...coming...coming....over my head and my chin bouncing off the street. It was really cool watching it in slow motion! And my mom had the BEST outfit to skate in with navy and red striped knee socks that matched her navy and red striped sweater!! If I can ever get ahold of that picture I'll post it!!
So NOW Adeline wants to be a skater. Not the skater like the boys and their cool skateboards hanging out at the skatepark...that was so last year....she wants to be the skater that hangs around Star Skate on a Friday night! So I decided to take her and her friend to Star Skate on Friday! Now, most kids get dropped off at 7:00 and picked up at 10:30 when the session is over but I told Adeline NOOOOO WAY! i needed to check this out and see what it was all about. I would go run an errand but would only be gone about 45 minutes. I was going to stay....eye roll, eye roll, eye roll, but Mom, that will be so embarassing to have you there! Yeah, come on Adeline's mom you don't have to stay!
So the complaining and begging me to leave continues as I walked in with them, and found my place on the bench by the rink....somewhat close to the ONLY other mother there! And she was with a bunch of 1st graders!!! I promised I wouldn't make eye contact and wouldn't embarass them by TALKING!! But to my surprise, they actually came up and talked to me more than a few times!!! And Adeline even TEXTED me while she was there! It actually turned out to be quite a fun night! I ran out to return jeans to Kohls and grab myself Pei Wei for dinner. YUM YUM and when I came back I found my place on the same bench. One of the little girls told me I looked pretty and I told her she was very pretty too and I liked her ribbons in her hair. Then she told me she was a cheerleader and it turns out she cheers in the same league Jackson and Miles play football in. So cute! Whenever she skated past me she would wave and smile and I thought...why can't Adeline wave and smile? ha ha
So 10:00 came and they were tired. The BOY she wanted to see didn't end up coming (I never knew that was part of the plan, but should have guessed it was!!) so we got to leave early! As we were walking out I said "See, I was good. I didn't bug you or try to talk to you. But YOU came and talked to me! It wasn't totally wierd, right?" And Adeline actually said "It would have been WIERDER if you WEREN'T HERE!!!" Yeah!! She's still my little girl!
