If you know Thad, you know that he LOVES fires! And who doesn't love a Fireman! He'll burn anything....branches, desks, paper plates, corn on the cob, DIAPERS in the campfire that you have to clean up after because everyone knows that dirty diapers DON'T burn! So you can imagine that he loves trimming up trees and bushes and making burn piles of things that actually do burn. And then lighting them up! We've been collecting branches for a while, and with the dry Spring season so far, and the WIND, we haven't been able to burn them. So Tuesday was the day. He called the Fire Dept in the morning, always a smart thing to do when Thad is in charge of the "controlled burn". They gave their OK, and we headed out to the pile with a can of diesel. Thad has figured out that if you use Diesel to start the fire it's a slow burn instead of a huge fireball exploding when you use gas. So it started out slow indeed, but when it got going it really got going!!
It was so big and hot he could hardly get close enough to keep the grass from spreading. His poor little face was burning up. Harrison and I had to stay back a ways. This was no toasty fire to get all cozy with! I was a little worried about my Weeping Willow tree close by, but he managed to keep it from going up in flames! And as you know by my older post, I LOVE my trees. Those are off limits to Thad and his matches! :) But it's good, he loves them just as much.
Harrison and I had a nice show, watching Thad work and sweat, dragging the hose around the pile and keeping the fire under control. It actually burned pretty quickly. But we were in BIG trouble when the kids got home from school because they didn't get to have the bon fire with us! Oh well, there are only so many times when you can actually do it and we had to get it done! And there will always be another pile started soon.
Now maybe we can get the garden ready and plant some of Harrison's "food seeds". Is charcoal good for gardens? We need to rotatill everything under and maybe we can get some food seeds in the ground. Or at least a couple tomato plants in some pots close to the house. I'm still wanting a strawberry patch one day, we'll see.....
